I got into this business because I love sports and call-in programming, not to push products. Sports talk radio stations have also been criticized by media watchdog groups for their lack of journalistic credibility and impartiality. Many inside the sports radio industry 31 local sports hosts throughout the United States are also employed by major sports team franchises to broadcast games. For instance, KHTK, the sports talk radio station in Sacramento, California, has a contract with the NBA Sacramento Kings to air their games.
The participants determined the settings for the interviews. The location for the interviews with one of the local hosts was the radio station. The interviews with the producer and Kevin Wheeler were conducted via email. My discussion with the station manager and the other local host occurred on the phone (via speaker phone so I could tape the interview). The data analysis began with a verbatim transcription of the audio-recorded and email interviews. Once this was completed, a qualitative content analysis was conducted to examine salient topics covered, patterns, regularities, and differences within and across the subjects.
It then is just about pleasing the sponsors and niche marketing . . it’s about saving money. I don’t want a national show. I like staying connected to a community. Kevin Wheeler, the national host I interviewed, had quite a different perspective. When I asked him about his thoughts on the radio industry, he replied, “No comments, really. ” Wheeler’s response is not surprising; he works as a nationally syndicated host for a big media company. Criticizing the trends of media conglomeration would potentially inside the sports radio industry 33 put his career at risk.
