Thus not only are antidepressants useful for treating mood disorders, they also allow us to see how depression is generated. To study the length of time it takes Effexor to trigger therapeutic changes in the brain, another group of researchers used MRI imaging to map brain metabolism. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging, where atoms in the brain are aligned by a powerful magnet. Each type of atom gives off a specific signal, so that brain matter activity can be mapped. Brain images were made of depressed patients before and after a regimen of Effexor was administered.

However, because SSRIs are relatively new, no one knows the effects of taking them for long periods of time. The British medical journal, Lancet, recently published a meta-analysis (systemic review of research articles) that looked at the long-term effects of severely depressed patients taking the SSRI Zoloft (sertraline). Most patients not only felt much better after short-term antidepressant therapy but were able to function better, a surprising result considering the seriousness of the illness.

Because of its unique properties and effectiveness, Effexor is a useful antidepressant for investigating how depression affects blood flow in the brain. Researchers compared depressed patients’ brains before and after successful treatment with the antidepressant. Over the course of a few weeks, Effexor increased cerebral blood flow in the thalamus (a relay center in the brain) and decreased blood flow in the temporal cortex (a region of higher cognitive functioning and emotion). By altering activity of the cortex, a region which may be overreacting to emotional situations, Effexor may be making the brain less prone to negative thinking.
